Chatterbird

Club Roar, 710 Fessey Park Road, Nashville, TN 37204

chatterbird presents an evening of intriguing new classical music with a bit of a twist... or shall we say, "twang?" Tennessee's musical heritage is lush with banjos, fiddles, pedal steel, and other instruments, and during this concert we'll be exploring some of the creative and unexpected ways these instruments can weave their way into a classical repertoire.

Works include a world premiere commission for chatterbird from Grammy-nominated mandolinist Matt Flinner (Matt Flinner Trio, Modern Mandolin Quartet) who, according to JazzTimes, “continues his reign as perhaps the most exciting and creative mandolin player on the scene today.” On Flinner, the Associated Press writes, “(Flinner) blurs the lines between jazz and bluegrass, traditional and avant-garde.”

chatterbird's celebrated Composer-in-Residence, Bryan Clark, will also present a world premiere for the ensemble with electronics. "Pantograph" is a journey that mixes flamenco bulerias rhythms, 4-voice contrapuntal fugue writing, polymodality, and jazz improvisation within a sonata rondo form (with a bit of twang to boot!) Both commissions are generously funded via a project grant from the Metro Nashville Arts Commission.

Two works were selected via a competitive Call for Scores opportunity that garnered over 100 entries from all over the world. The winning pieces were:

"Liftoff," by Scott Lee, for flute, clarinet, trumpet, violin (fiddle), viola, cello. Lee is a 2015 Morton Gould Young Composer Award winner, a PhD candidate in composition at Duke University, and a graduate of Vanderbilt.

"Awake, Awake," by David Kirkland Garner, for soprano, alto flute, banjo, pedal steel guitar, electric guitar, and cello; based on Dylan Chandler's rendition of "Awake, Awake," a folk ballad. Garner is on the faculty at Duke University and Elon University. His work has been commissioned by world-class performing ensembles, including the Kronos Quartet.

Other works on the program include:

"O Bury Me Not," by Ian Dicke, for bass trombone, chamber ensemble, radio, and live electronics; based on a 1939 field recording of the famous folk song.

"Taking Up Serpents," by Paula Van Goes, for solo saxophone. Inspired by the snake handlers of Pentecostal churches, the saxophone speaks in tongues, emulating the pastor and his serpents.

"Life is Blank," by Jason Treuting, for four musicians and the daily news. Using snippets from newspaper articles to form the rhythmic and melodic patterns, you'll hear a playful piece with surprising instrumentation.

Featuring special guest performers Timbre Cierpke (vocals), Smith Curry (pedal steel), Charles Butler (banjo), Chris Brush (percussion), and Matt Flinner (mandolin). CLUB ROAR is a music recording studio and venue in the heart of Berry Hill.

This program is sponsored in part by the Metro Nashville Arts Commission and the Danielle Rose Paikin Foundation.

Tickets are $20 whether you buy 'em now or at the door (we'll take cash, check or card), but we expect this will sell out! Buy early!
